Thoughts from a 7 (almost 8!) year old

This evening at dinner, Estin was talking about a time when he was with my parents at a hotel. He was referencing how hot it was outside today, and comparing it to this time he remembered. This was at least 3 years ago, probably longer...this kid remembers everything!  He told me about remembering how hot it was when he was with them walking into the hotel; and told me it was before granddad was handicapped.

The conversation then turned - he said mom, I wish Granddad wasn't handicapped.  I told him that I wished he wasn't either and it made me sad.  He responded with, "Yeah, I'm sure it does - especially because it's your dad.  I don't know what I'd do if it were my dad."

Wow...made me tear up.  Kids realize so much more than what we give them credit for.  I've never felt my child sympathize for me like he did with that statement....and as quickly as the moment came, it left, and the conversation took another turn to something else....
